What our reads think of TravelPlus

I recently received the following feed back to our June/July issue from two TravelPlus readers that I thought I would share with you.

Dear Simon,
I used to get the print magazine and loved it.
Only just discovered you still exist but online! – Please pass on to your circulation department....

Hi Simon
Just love the new format – brilliant, and we are saving the planet too (though for what, I don’t know, perhaps for Christmas, who knows).

Just one thought, is it possible to have feedback links on the magazine? We could add our comments and you then have loads of (perhaps comic) feedback for future editions. You could even have snap surveys to see what we really think about APT, booking a ticket on the new Titanic etc.

Caribbean Tourism Organisation joins Air Passenger Duty debate

Caribbean Tourism Organisation joins Air Passenger Duty debate an issue first raised by TravelPlus in our recent issue June/July by releasing the following press release

New government tax proposal angers Caribbean community

Anyone in Britain with a Caribbean connection is being urged to urgently write to their MP before 7 July to stop a new Government tax which could mean they will pay more to fly to the Caribbean than America after November of this year.

There is already growing anger amongst communities in Britain about plans to impose a higher increase in Air Passenger Duty from November on flights to the Caribbean than flights to the USA.

Constituents with Caribbean connections are turning the issue of Air Passenger Duty (APD) into an election issue. A letter-writing campaign to politicians is underway from community groups and individuals concerned for the impact on their own travel plans as well as the economic impact on their friends and family within the Caribbean.

That anger is now striking a chord with politicians. Sarah Teather, MP for Brent East tabled an early day motion in Parliament yesterday (30 June) after receiving numerous letters from constituents angry and worried about the proposed tax changes.

Her motion says, "That this House notes the Government's plans to introduce a new banding system for air passenger duty; believes that any duty should be based on the level of carbon emissions produced by flights rather than arbitrary zones based on location of a country's capital city; notes that actual distance travelled is a good approximation for carbon emissions; further notes that the new banding system will result in flights to the Caribbean incurring a higher tax than flights to the West Coast of the United States, despite being closer in distance to the UK; is concerned that this will disadvantage the many people who have friends and family in the Caribbean, while also failing to effectively curb carbon emissions; further notes that replacing the air passenger duty with a per plane tax would be fairer for passengers flying on busy routes; and calls on the Government to abolish the air passenger duty and replace it with a per plane aviation duty based on the actual distance travelled"

Carol Hay of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation said travel agents who specialise in the Caribbean are also furious about proposed changes. "Everyone accepts we need to have taxes, but we feel this tax is simply unfair to one region of the world, she said. “It discriminates against anyone who wants to visit the region and to anyone who has business or family connections.
“We only have a tiny window of time to try to get our voice heard, so we're urging anyone who thinks they will be affected by this, or knows of people who will be affected to get involved and email their MP to protest. It's a simply question of clicking onto our website
www.onecaribbean.org/traveltrade/tradenews/newsandfeatures/apd.aspx to find the email address of your MP and to look at the draft letters that we've written to give you a sense of what needs to be said."

Under the new scheme, a family of four travelling to visit friends and family in the region and to attend special events such as funerals will be required to pay up to £600 in tax alone
